With O-lan at this side, his family continues to prosper. His life becomes more complicated, however, the richer he gets. Wang Lung then commits a life-changing act that pierces O-lan's heart in the most profoundly heartbreaking way. As the years pass, his sons become educated and literate, and the family continues to prosper. With the great house of Hwang on the skids, an opportunity to buy their house, the very same house from where he had fetched O-lan many years ago, becomes available. Pressed upon to buy that house by his sons, who do not share Wang Lung's veneration for the land and rural life, he buys the house. The country mice now have become the city mice. This is a potent story, brimming with irony, yet simply told against a framework of mounting social change. It is a story that stands as a parable in many ways and is one that certainly should be read. It illustrates the timeless dichotomy between the young and the old, the old and the new, and the rich and the poor. И хотя в «Сыновьях» рисуется дальнейшая судьба сыновей Ван Луна, этот роман по существу так же, как и «Земля», является вполне законченным и самостоятельным романом. Оба романа — «Земля» и «Сыновья» — написаны вне времени и пространства. Почти невозможно установить время и место действия романа. «Сыновья» написаны так, что их можно отнести к концу прошлого века и к настоящему времени. Если «Земля» целиком была посвящена деревне, ее быту, процессу накопления, то «Сыновья» посвящены исключительно важной и интересной теме — китайскому милитаризму. Биографию матери Перл Бак стала писать сразу же после смерти Кэролайн Сталтинг (Керри) в 1921 г., и первоначально она не планировала ее публиковать. Во время событий в Нанкине в 1926–1927 годах, когда дом Перл Бак подвергся разгрому, рукопись этой книги оказалась в числе немногих вещей, не украденных и не уничтоженных. В начале 30-х годов текст был переработан. Писательница решилась его напечатать лишь в 1936 г. (под названием «Чужие края»), после того как получили известность «Земля» и другие «китайские» романы и се литературная репутация упрочилась. Работа над книгой об отце («Сражающийся ангел») также началась сразу же после его кончины в 1931 г. Ей предшествовал написанный Перл Бак некролог об Абсоломе Сайденстрикере (1852–1931), в котором содержались фактические данные о его жизни и, естественно, подчеркивались его заслуги и достоинства.
