Es gara acīm redzēju glīti sakārtotu papīru kaudzi sava biroja stūrī, par kuru varēju klientiem un draugiem lepni stāstīt, ka tas ir mans romāns. Kaut kur smadzeņu dzijumos es gatavojos to arī publicēt, bet es šo nodomu kā galveno neatceros, vismaz ne tad, kad sāku rakstīt. Tas bija mans pirmais lielais daiļliteratūras darbs. Es sāku rakstīt 1984. gada rudeni, tikko pirms trīs gadiem biju beidzis tieslietu studijas un vēl biju stipri zaļš. Tajos sākuma gados es pavadīju daudz laika tiesas zālēs, pētot, kā labi advokāti to dara. Mani tiesas zāles allaž ir valdzinājušas, un tas notiek vēl arvien. Tur runā par jautājumiem, ko nekad nedzird ārpus mājām. Visdramatiskākie notikumi notiek tiesas zālēs, nevis ekrānos vai uz skatuves. Kādu dienu es nejauši piedalījos drausmīgā prāvā, kur jauna meitene apsūdzēja vīrieti, kas viņu bija brutāli izvarojis. Tas nav aizmirstams piedzīvojums, un es biju tikai skatītājs. Vienu brīdi viņa bija varonīga, citu—nožēlojami vāja. Es bijupārakmeņojies. Es nevarēju pat iedomāties murgus, kas viņai un viņas ģimenei bija jāpiedzīvo. Man bija jādomā par to, ko es darītu, ja viņa būtu mana meita. Kad es redzēju viņas mokas zvērināto priekšā, es gribēju pašrocīgi nošaut izvarotāju. īsu. bet mūžīgu brīdi es vēlējos, lai viņa būtu mana meita. Te bija stāsta iedīgļi. Mani sāka valdzināt doma par tēva atriebību. Ko zvērinātie, kas nāk no tautas, iesāktu ar šādu tēvu ? Dabiski—būtu daudz līdzjūtības, bet vai tās būtu diezgan, lai attaisnotu? Šī romāna ideja mani nodarbināja kādus trīs mēnešus, un šai laikā man prātā nebija nekā cita. Es pirmo nodaļu uzrakstīju rokrakstā un lūdzu savai sievai Renē to izlasīt. Viņu tā iespaidoja, un viņa gribēja lasīt otru nodaļu. Pēc mēneša man bija gatava otrā un trešā nodaļa, un arī tās viņu savaldzināja. Renē lasa piecas vai sešas grāmatas nedēļā — mistērijas, trillerus, spiegu stāstus, daudz daiļliteratūras, un viņai nepatīk tās grāmatas, kas nespēj viņu saistīt. Es pasāku rakstīt grāmatu brīvajā laikā — pa stundai, mēģinot uzrakstīt vienu lapu dienā. Es to darīju visu laiku. Bet es atceros, ka bija četras nedēļas, kad es neuzrakstīju ne rindiņu. Tāpat izlaidu reizēm pa dienai, bet uz priekšu es rakos aklā centībā. Man šķita, ka temats ir brīnišķīgs, bet mani mocīja stils. Renē tas patika, un es turpināju. Pēc gada es pabrīnījos par lielo lappušu kaudzi un atklāju, ka grāmata ir uzrakstīta līdz pusei. Man sākotnējais mērķis aizmirsās, un es sāku domāt par līgumiem, autora honorāriem un elegantām pusdienām ar redaktoriem — katra jauna autora sapņi. Trīs gadus pēc sākuma Renē izlasīja pēdējo nodaļu, un mēs manuskriptu nosūtījām uz Ņujorku. Darba tituls bija "Nāves zvans", slikts nosaukums, ko mēs atmetām, tikko manuskripts nonāca mana jaunā aģenta DžejaGarona birojā. Sešpadsmit citu aģentu un divpadsmit apgādu to negribēja. Dzejs manuskriptu pieņēma un teica, lai es rakstu nākamo grāmatu. Es padomam paklausīju. Pagāja gads bez pārmaiņām, un es biju ieracies romānā "Firma", kad Džejs 1988. gada aprīlī piezvanīja ar burvīgo ziņu, ka manuskripts pieņemts publicēšanai. Bils Tomsons no "Vinvudas Preses" to bija izlasījis un tūliņ nopircis. Viņa vadībā es romānu pamatīgi pārstrādāju, un man bija grāmata ar vismaz deviņiem nosaukumiem, kamēr izšķiros par "Laiks nogalināt". Man ar grāmatu nosaukumiem neveicas. "Vinvuda" 1989. gada jūnijā iespieda 5000 eksemplārus un tos izplatīja. Grāmatu labi pirka manas dzīvesvietas apkaimē, bet pārējā pasaule to ignorēja. Nebija ne kabatas formāta, ne starptautisku līgumu. Bet tas bija pirmais romāns, un to pa lielākai daļai ir grūti pārdot. Labāki laiki bija ļoti tuvu. Es pabeidzu "Firmu" 1989. gadā un nosūtīju to Dzejām. To nopirka Dobledejs/Dells. un, kad to 1991. gadamartāpublicēja, mana rakstnieka karjera pēkšņi uzlabojās. "Firmas" sekmes radīja jaunu interesi par grāmatu "Laiks nogalināt". Grāmatā ir daudz autobiogrāfiska. Es vairs nestrādāju advokatūrā, bet desmit gadus es to darīju diezgan līdzīgi Džeikam Brigansam. Es pārstāvēju cilvēkus, bet nekādā ziņā ne bankas, apdrošināšanas vai citas lielas firmas. Es biju ielas advokāts. Dzeiks un es — mēs esam vienaudzi. Ari es vidusskolā spēlēju amerikāņu futbolu un biju spēles vadītājs, lai gan ne īpaši labs. Daudz tāda, ko viņš saka un dara, arī es teiktu un darītu līdzīgos apstākļos. Mums abiem pieder sābi. Mēs abi esam piedzīvojuši neizturamo spiedienu, ko rada slepkavību prāvas un ko es esmu mēģinājis attēlot. Mēs abi esam klientu dēļ gulējuši nomodā tin vēmuši tualetēs. Ši grāmata nāk tieši no sirds. Tā ir mana pirmā grāmata, un šur tur es "lēkāju". Bet es grāmatā nemainītu ne zilbi, pat ja kāds to prasītu. Oksfordā, Misisipi 1992. gada 30. janvāri TULKOTĀJA PIEZĪMES Grāmatas darbība notiek t.s. "dziļajos ASV dienvidos", kur sabiedrību veidojusi no Āfrikas atvesto vergu pēcteči un baltie un ieskatus ir iespaidojusi sakari starp abām rasēm daudzās paaudzēs. XIX gs. ASV dienvidos nēģerus neuzskatīja par cilvēkiem, un tas tieši noveda pie Ziemeļamerikas civilkara 1862. gadā. Ari pēc šī kara nēģeru stāvoklis dienvidu štatos visai daudz neuzlabojās un uzlabojumi neb ija regulāri. Par to īpaši rūpējās balto organizācija Kukluksklans. Organizācijas nosaukums nāk no veclaicīgas šautenes uzvilkšanas un izšaušanas skaņām. Klans sludināja balto cilvēku pārākumu. Lai ari šis organizācijas nozīme ir krietni mazinājusies, tā nav mirusi un parādās arī šai grāmatā. Tās tērps ir balts talārs ar smailu cepuri, kas aizklāj seju, atstājot redzamas tikai acis; viņu darbības veids ir iebaidīšana ar lielu krustu dedzināšanu vainīgā cilvēka mājas priekšā, draudēšana pa tālruni, īpaši nakts stundās, un dažāda veida vardarbība. Klana nodaļas sauc par klavcrnām. Vēl šī gadsimta vidū ASV dienvidos abas rases stingri nošķīra vienu no otras skolās, restorānos, satiksmes līdzekļos u.c. To sauc par segregāciju. Pēc piketiem un protestiem, kas prasīja ari cilvēku dzīvības, ASV federālā valdība pavēlēja integrēt skolas un sabiedriskās celtnes. Grāmatas darbības laikā sabiedrībā ir izcēlušies gan bagāti, gan spējīgi melnās rases pārstāvji. Jāpiezīmē, ka laika gaitā šai rasei ir izveidojies nosaukums — Āfrikas amerikānis. Vārds nigeris, ko nicīgi lieto baltie, ir apvainojošs. Savukārt ASV dienvidu bieži vien aprobežotajiem baltajiem, kas ienīst visu svešo: nēģerus, katoļus, žīdus, ārzemniekus u.c., ir izveidojusies iesauka redneck (sarkankakls), kas grāmatā ir atstāta netulkota — redneks. Grāmatā ir ari plaši apskatīta ASV tiesu sistēma ar zvērinātajiem, parasti divpadsmit cilvēkiem, kas — teorētiski — nāk no apsūdzētajam līdzīgām aprindām un ir preses ziņojumu neiespaidoti. Šai masu informācijas laikmetā tas ir gandrīz neiespējami, bet šī no Anglijas pārņemtā sistēma tomēr ir izrādījusies noturīga. Jāpiebilst, ka ASV likumi nav kodificēti, kā tas ir lielākajā daļā Eiropas valstu. Visas tieslietas notiek uz iepriekšēju lēmumu jeb precedentu pamata
