Prix Goncourt 1999 Quelques jours avant de mourir, l'assistant du personnage central (marchand d'art dont l'affaire périclite) le met sur la piste de pièces très rares enfouies dans les cales d'un navire échoué sur la banquise depuis 40 ans. Il part en expédition, et finit par ramener le trésor. Le soir même, quelqu'un pénètre dans l'atelier et le lui dérobe. Très rapidement, la police localise le coupable. Pour des raisons qui ne vont pas tarder à apparaître, l'inspecteur chargé de l'enquête lance le personnage central sur ses traces. Une surprise attend en effet ce dernier. Il revient avec le trésor, en tire beaucoup d'argent. Sa vie change: appartement somptueux, vêtements élégants, nouvelle femme. Mais change-t-elle vraiment? Faire un résumé de Je m'en vais est sans doute la pire façon d'en parler. L'histoire est cohérente et pourrait servir de synopsis à beaucoup de films d'action. Les personnages sont des gens ordinaires vivant chacun un peu enfermés dans leur milieu professionnel. Leur base de communication est souvent étroite. Ainsi l'expédition dans le Grand Nord est décrite par le prisme d'un parisien d'une cinquantaine d'années n'ayant que peu de goût et d'expérience pour l'aventure. Ce même parisien finit par entretenir avec le jeune enquêteur une relation plutôt taciturne quoique pleine d'estime réciproque. Les personnages d'Echenoz sont condamnés à cette solitude qui est notre lot à tous. Jamais pourtant le livre ne verse dans le pathos. Tout le talent d'Echenoz tient dans la distance qu'il parvient à mettre dans son écriture. Restant prudemment à côté de son histoire et de ses personnages, se permettant parfois une intervention critique ("Il faut bien dire ce qui est: Baumgartner m'ennuie"), il joue avec son livre. Il se refuse à l'introspection, préférant une écriture plus objective. Elle n'est pas neutre pour autant. Echenoz manie l'ironie avec une gaîté légère qui n'est pas sans rappeler celle des meilleurs ouvrages d'Amélie Nothomb. Il s'est choisi la position d'un auteur-narrateur qui serait omnipotent, mais pas omniscient. Ceci lui offre une liberté dont il use avec parcimonie, mais toujours en s'amusant. C'est tant mieux pour moi. Ce plaisir d'écrire, absent de tant de romans français dont je viens de terminer la lecture (voir la Pile de Bouquins pour plus de détails) produit de véritables pépites qui me consolent de bien des désappointements. A croire qu'en littérature, l'or ne se cache pas dans le sable, mais dans la merde. Et plus celle-ci est profonde, plus précieuses sont les pépites

Sa profession, thanatopracteur, n'est probablement pas pour rien dans son goût pour le crime et l'humour… noir. Cet auteur atypique voue un culte immodéré à Frédéric Dard. Sa plume est trempée dans la même encre. Résultat, on se passionne, on se gondole, on frémit, bref on se régale. La preuve c'est Nadine Monfils, la mère de Mémé Cornemuse et d'Evis Cadillac qui signe la préface

Ovšem i v tak temné době nachází don Rumata mezi místními u pár v té době výjimečných lidí velké přátelství a dokonce i lásku… Šedí však nespí, jedné noci při mocném úderu se snaží strhnout na sebe vládu a zlikvidovat své odpůrce; Rumatovi přátelé jsou zabiti, on sám zachráněn pomocí ze Země, která přes zásadu neovlivňovat místní vývoj cítí povinnost určitým způsobem zasáhnout proti Šedým ve prospěch ostatních

Miał gwiazdy pod nogami, a więc zdeptane. Jednak ruch własny Armstronga 7, w którym, chcąc nie chcąc, brał udział - ruch ten nieustannie usuwał mu kosmos spod masywnych buciorów skafandra. Wszystko się przemieszczało. Idę nie poruszając kończynami, myślał baśniowo. Podniósł spojrzenie znad zgiętych kolan. Wszędzie to samo. Ta czerń. Szukał gwiazd orientacyjnych, kiedyś przecież uczył się kosmografii. To chyba Syriusz... albo i nie Syriusz. Samo Słońce znajdowało się z przeciwnej strony, niewiele większe. Najłatwiejszy do zlokalizowania powinien być Saturn, najjaśniejsza spośród wszystkich tych zimnych iskier. Gdzieś za lewym ramieniem... Obejrzał się. Za lewym ramieniem miał już inny kawałek wszechświata, sfera niebieska zdążyła się obrócić. Tam z boku sunął krzywy płat bezgwiezdnego cienia: to jeden z orbitujących dookoła Armstronga 7 fragmentów jego rozprutej czaszy odrzutowej, niczym Moebiusowsko wykręcona ćwiartka skórki pomarańczy

Lekkomyślny jubiler Październik w Tatrach bywa na ogół piękny i spokojny, więc stali bywalcy pensjonatu "Carlton" tę porę wybrali na urlop. Jednak najwyraźniej mieli pecha, bo choć pogoda dopisała, to niemal na ich oczach popełniono przestępstwo i z gromadki turystów zmienili się w gromadkę podejrzanych. Otóż jeden z wczasowiczów, jubiler z Warszawy, niejaki Dobrozłocki (dobre nazwisko dla jubilera), został znienacka walnięty młotkiem w głowę i obrabowany z cennych klejnotów, którymi dopiero co chwalił się przed mieszkańcami pensjonatu. Na uwagę na temat beztroskiego traktowania precjozów, odpowiedział: "Gdyby pan całe życie miał do czynienia z klejnotami, traktowałby je pan jak zwykłe kamienie". Przestępca był innego zdania i właściwie ocenił wartość biżuterii. "Przecież to jest suma, która każdego z nas urządza do końca życia. Bez zmartwień i kłopotów. A jeżeli jeszcze do tego taką fortunę można zdobyć jednym uderzeniem ciężkiego przedmiotu w cudzą głowę, to okoliczności mogły skusić niejednego, który dotychczas w oczach ludzi, a nawet we własnym sumieniu uchodził za kryształowego człowieka." – stwierdził pułkownik Edward Lasota, pracownik Komendy Głównej Milicji, który wprawdzie przebywał w Zakopanem na zupełnie prywatnym urlopie, ale na prośbę prowadzącego śledztwo porucznika Klimczaka włączył się do sprawy. Porucznik Klimczak potrzebował wsparcia, ponieważ zaledwie miesiąc wcześniej opuścił mury szkoły milicyjnej w Szczytnie i właściwie nie miał żadnego doświadczenia w prowadzeniu takich spraw. A poza tym, jak powiedział współpracujący z nim sierżant: "Jeżeli pułkownik będzie razem z nami, to i śledztwo będzie poważniej wyglądało, i skorzystamy z doświadczenia fachowca." Tak więc jubiler wylądował w szpitalu, a w "Carltonie" zainstalowała się ekipa śledcza. Po dokładnym zbadaniu miejsca przestępstwa przystąpiono do przesłuchiwania podejrzanych, czyli wszystkich w owym czasie obecnych w pensjonacie. Nie była to łatwa praca, ponieważ goście pensjonatu "Carlton" mało przypominali zwykłych wczasowiczów. Był tu między innymi dziennikarz z Warszawy, autor bestsellerowej powieści kryminalnej "Zbrodnia w Powszechnym Domu Towarowym", był artysta malarz, oryginał, który w restauracji demonstracyjnie zamawiał likier do dzwonka śledzia, był inżynier z Wrocławia, straszny podrywacz, było też kilka innych osób, ale największe emocje budziła pani Zofia Zachwytowicz, kandydatka na gwiazdę filmową (jakieś niewielkie rólki miała już na swoim koncie), osoba pozująca na ekscentryczną i roztrzepaną, a w rzeczywistości trzeźwa i konsekwentnie dążąca do wyznaczonego sobie celu. Przesłuchiwani kolejno wczasowicze mówili dużo i chętnie, nie pozostawiając na bliźnich suchej nitki. Okazało się, że choć mieszkają w różnych miastach i obracają się w różnych środowiskach, wiedzą o sobie nadspodziewanie dużo (a szczególnie o kłopotach finansowych) i chętnie dzielą się tymi informacjami z milicją. Jednak – ku zaskoczeniu milicjantów – nikt nikogo nie oskarżał o napad na jubilera, wszyscy wzajemnie dawali sobie alibi. W pewnym momencie porucznik zauważył nawet kąśliwie, że wygląda na to, iż jubiler w ten oryginalny sposób usiłował popełnić samobójstwo. W końcu jednak winny został odkryty, a namierzyli go niemal łeb w łeb pułkownik z długoletnim doświadczeniem i porucznik stawiający pierwsze kroki jako detektyw. Co może tylko dobrze świadczyć o szkole milicyjnej w Szczytnie, która wypuszczała takich fachowców. Autor podsumował sprawę: "Oto do skomplikowanego dochodzenia zaprasza się asa służby wywiadowczej i to aż z samej Komendy Głównej MO. As przybywa, prowadzi dochodzenie i stwierdza, że jego obecność właściwie nie była wcale potrzebna, bo młody podporucznik, zaledwie miesiąc na stażu, dochodzi do tych samych wniosków." Książka z pewnością nie należy do najlepszych powieści Edigeya, ale czyta się ją całkiem sympatycznie. Mamy trochę realiów, trochę emocji i trochę odkrywczych informacji typu: "kolano jest najbrzydszą częścią kobiecej nogi". I gdyby nie to, że w pewnym miejscu autor napisał: "Powieść kryminalna to w ogóle żerowanie na najniższych gustach pospólstwa", to zapewne książka podobałaby mi się o wiele bardziej
