Podobnie jak namiętność i ich wzajemne uczucie… Prawie idealnie to zabawna, ciepła i pełna uroku komedia romantyczna, która otwiera „trylogię idealną”

Wydaną w 1996 r. powieść nagradzano wielokrotnie, m.in. Nagrodą im. Kościelskich, Paszportem „Polityki", nominacją do NIKE i wyróżnieniem publiczności w tym konkursie. To „Prawiekiem" Tokarczuk potwierdziła pokładane w niej nadzieje, że będzie odrodzicielką fabuły w polskiej prozie, i spełniła oczekiwania na pojawienie się pisarza czy może lepiej pisarki, zarówno oryginalnej, intrygującej, ambitnej, jak i tworzącej dla ludzi. Takiej, której książki chce się po prostu czytać, a zarazem wracać do nich wielokrotnie. „Prawiek" jest powieścią niezwykłą i stanowi bardzo ciekawy projekt artystyczny. To z jednej strony saga, nawiązująca do najlepszych tradycji tego gatunku, opowiadająca o dziejach dwóch rodzin – Boskich i Niebieskich – zamieszkujących fikcyjną wieś Prawiek, położoną gdzieś w Kieleckiem. Akcja książki rozpoczyna się u wrót I wojny światowej, a doprowadzona zostaje aż do lat 80. XX w. i opisuje perypetie trzech pokoleń. Ale jest to także powieść-rzeka, gdyż portretuje też świat jako taki, wprowadza liczne wątki poboczne – w tym refleksyjne, magiczne, historyczne, filozoficzne – i zaludnia karty opowieści innymi licznymi bohaterami, których zagmatwane często losy składają się na swoiste puzzle rzeczywistości i zbiorowy portret polskiej prowincji w minionym stuleciu. Tokarczuk nie snuje swych historii z punktu widzenia wielkich przemian, procesów historycznych, cywilizacyjnych czy politycznych. Przyjmuje perspektywę jednostkową – jej książka jest przede wszystkim opowieścią (wyraźnie zresztą noszącą stygmat feminizmu) o konkretnych osobach i w tym właśnie przejawia się siła i moc przekonywania jej narracji. Dzieje poszczególnych ludzi (a zwłaszcza kobiet!), ich uwikłania i pokrętne drogi życiowe wydają się przy tym zaskakująco prawdziwe i – co najważniejsze – autentyczne, a dzięki temu zyskują akceptację czytelnika. Innym walorem „Prawieku" jest całościowe założenie opowieści. Tytułowy Prawiek jest co prawda prowincjonalną wsią, ale także metaforą świata. Niczym Reymontowskie Lipce stanowi przestrzeń zamkniętą, w której dzieje się wszystko: historia wkracza brutalnie, polityka weń ingeruje, zachodzą społeczne i kulturowe przemiany, ale główny nurt zdarzeń rozgrywa się w hermetycznym kręgu lokalnej społeczności pełnej tyleż typowych, co oryginalnych indywidualności ludzkich. Tokarczuk portretuje polską prowincję inaczej niż inni polscy pisarze zajmujący się tą tematyką. Nie uprawia satyry jak Redliński (jako autor „Konopielki"), nie kultywuje nostalgii jak Myśliwski (jako autor „Kamienia na kamieniu"), nie fascynuje ją upadek tradycyjnej chłopskiej kultury i społeczne dramaty człowieka jak Kawalca (jako autora „Tańczącego jastrzębia"). Jej wieś jest tyleż realistyczna, co magiczna. Jej opowieść – tyleż psychologiczna, co symboliczna. W pewnym sensie artystyczna wizja Tokarczuk przypomina w „Prawieku" dzieła romantyków: stanowi pomieszanie realizmu i fantastyki, racjonalnego opisu i magii, jest opowieścią zakorzenioną w historii, a jednocześnie pełną fantazmatów. Można ją, oczywiście, czytać jako historię polskiej wsi w burzliwym wieku wojen i politycznych przemian. Można ją także czytać jako przypowieść o skomplikowanych ludzkich losach. Jako powieść psychologiczną i metaforyczną jednocześnie. Kluczem do zrozumienia „Prawieku" jest jednak mit. „Od kiedy pamiętam, chciałam napisać książkę taką jak ta. Stworzyć i opisać świat. Jest to historia świata, który jak wszystko, co żywe, rodzi się, rozwija i umiera" – powiada o „Prawieku" Tokarczuk. Mit bowiem stanowi uniwersalny wzorzec ludzkiego losu. Każda wielka powieść sięga do mitów – twierdzi pisarka – to znaczy do skarbnicy uniwersaliów. I taki jest też właśnie „Prawiek". Bardziej wyrafinowany czytelnik odnajdzie więc w tej książce buddyjską refleksję nad ludzkim i zwierzęcym cierpieniem, sentymentalno-romantyczny stosunek do natury, jungowską reinterpretację hiobowego cierpienia jako metaforę ludzkiego istnienia, dialog pomiędzy pascalowską i oświeceniową, racjonalną koncepcją postrzegania Boga, wreszcie pesymistyczną – gnostycką – wizję świata. Ale nade wszystko jest to zapierająca dech w piersiach opowieść o ludzkim życiu i zmaganiu się z samym sobą, okolicznościami, moralnymi i religijnymi normami, historią.
