Horhe Luiss Borhess piedzima 1899. gadā Argentīnā un nomira 1986. gadā Zenēvā. 1922. gadā viņš kopā ar citiem rakstniekiem nodibināja žurnālu Proa (“Priekšgals”) un 1923. gadā publicēja savu pirmo dzejoļu grāmatu Fervor de Buenos Airēs (“Buenosairesas svelme”). Šajā laikā viņš sāk sadarboties ar žurnāliem Martin Fierro, La Prensay Sintesis, vēlāk ar žurnāliem Critica, Sur un El Hogar. Par darbu Fkciones (“Izdomājumi”, stāsti, 1944) Horhe Luiss Borhess saņēma Argentīnas Rakstnieku savienības Lielo goda prēmiju. Vēlāk viņš nodibināja un vadīja žurnālu Anāles de Buenos Airēs (1946-1948), bet no 1950. līdz 1953. gadam bija Argentīnas Rakstnieku savienības priekšsēdis. 1955. gadā viņu uzņēma Argentīnas Literatūras akadēmijā un norīkoja par Valsts bibliotēkas vadītāju, šo posteni viņš ieņēma līdz aiziešanai pensijā 1973. gadā. No plašā Borhesa darbu klāsta noteikti jāmin “Pasaules negoda vēsture”, “Izdomājumi” (Valsts prēmija literatūrā, 1956), “Alefs”, “Brodjē atskaite” un “Smilšu grāmata”; esejas “Evaristo Karjego”, “Mūžības vēsture”, “Diskusija” un “Citi pētījumi”; divpadsmit dzeju krājumi, pēdējais — “Sazvērnieki”. 1961. gadā Pasaules izdevēju kongress piešķir Borhesam (kopā ar Semjuelu Beketu) Formentora prēmiju, un tā atnes rakstniekam starptautisku atzīšanu.
